Can Intermittent Fasting Reduce the Risk of Colon Cancer in Women Over 50?
Nov 19, 2024Hello everyone! I'm Dy Ann Parham, the creator of the Intermittent Fasting for Todays Aging Woman Course and Community. In this article, I'll be sharing my personal journey with intermittent fasting, its potential anti-aging benefits, and how it might relate to reducing the risk of colon cancer.
My Personal Colonoscopy Journey
My first colonoscopy was in 2018, about a year after I began practicing intermittent fasting seriously. Despite leading a healthy lifestyle as a health and wellness coach, the results were surprising. I had several large polyps, some of which were precancerous. This was a wake-up call for me, emphasizing the importance of colonoscopies as preventative measures. They are not just a procedure but a gateway to making informed lifestyle choices.
Following this, I doubled down on my fasting regimen. By 2021, during my second colonoscopy, although polyps were again found, none were precancerous this time. This improvement continued, and by my third colonoscopy in 2024, no polyps were detected at all. This progression not only highlighted the changes in my physical health but also underscored the potential impact of a consistent intermittent fasting lifestyle.
The Anti-Aging Benefits of Intermittent Fasting
Over the years, intermittent fasting has offered me more than just improved colon health. Here are some of the significant benefits I've experienced:
- Menopausal Symptom Relief: Intermittent fasting helped alleviate many of the symptoms associated with menopause.
- Reversal of Pre-diabetic Condition: My blood sugar levels stabilized, reversing my pre-diabetic condition.
- Improved Cholesterol Levels: My cholesterol levels are now in a normal range, eliminating the need for medical interventions.
- Bone Health: I reversed my osteopenia, which was progressing towards osteoporosis.
- Optimal Metabolic Health: All my metabolic blood markers, including cortisol and insulin levels, are perfect, indicating no signs of aging from a medical standpoint.
These improvements are a testament to the body's ability to heal and rejuvenate itself when given the right conditions, primarily through proper fasting and dietary choices.
Why Consider Intermittent Fasting?
Intermittent fasting is not just about weight loss or managing eating schedules; it's about understanding and listening to your body. It's about recognizing the signs your body gives you in both fed and fasted states and responding appropriately. This lifestyle choice can potentially prolong and improve your life quality, allowing you to age without the burden of chronic diseases or constant medical care.
The Practicality of Intermittent Fasting
One of the most appealing aspects of intermittent fasting is its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. In a world where food costs are continually rising, reducing food intake can relieve financial stress. Moreover, it's about making smart, health-promoting choices rather than over-consuming, which can lead to health issues and accelerated aging. By adopting intermittent fasting, you're not only saving on groceries but also investing in your long-term health.
Creating a Sustainable Lifestyle
Intermittent fasting is not about extreme restrictions or rigorous schedules. It's about integrating it into your life in a way that feels natural and sustainable. Here's how you can make intermittent fasting work for you:
- Understand Your Body's Signals: Learn to recognize how your body responds to hunger and fullness. This awareness can help you adjust your eating and fasting periods according to your body's needs.
- Adapt Flexibly: Allow your fasting schedule to fit naturally with your lifestyle. This flexibility can make it easier to maintain in the long run without feeling burdened.
- Focus on Nutritional Quality: During eating periods, choose foods that nourish your body and support your health goals. Quality over quantity is key.
